2025-2026 Step Up To Reading Challenge - Home Reading Starts Sept. 15th
Dear Lion Families,
Beginning next week, Morrill Elementary students will be participating in the Step Up to Reading Challenge. We are encouraging our students to read a lot at school and at home!
The reason is simple: Research shows that students who read for over 30 minutes every day have a better chance for success in school and beyond. The more time your student spends reading at their level, the better reader they’ll become!
Every day, your student will bring home books or reading materials and a home reading log. Each 15 minute period of reading counts as 1 Step. Our goal is to read 4 Steps per day: two at school (30 minutes) and two at home (30 minutes). Teachers will help by tracking the amount of steps earned at school.
Please be a Home Reading Coach for your child! Help them establish daily reading habits and assist when needed. The reading can be a variety of things: picture & chapter books, sight words, reading aloud, or silent reading. The reading should be easy & fun for everyone involved. You can break up the 30 minutes into more manageable chunks each night for your family.
There are small prizes, rewards, and incentives for students who earn steps at school & home. Of course, the biggest reward is becoming a better reader!
Please fill out & return the attached note to help your student with this challenge. Students also need to sign and agree to STEP UP TO THE CHALLENGE!
Be a Home Reading Coach:
*Turn off TV, computers, phones, and games.
*Guide your student to find a quiet, comfortable place to focus on reading.
*Help your student read for 2 Steps, which is 30 minutes, at least 5 days a week. (Read to them, listen to them read, read along with them, watch them read with a sibling.)
*Talk about the books your student chooses to read.
*Track minutes and sign the reading log every day your student reads.
*Help your student return their books and reading log to school each day.
Thank you for your support. We can’t wait to celebrate our Lion Readers!
